In 1983 Greg LeMond became for the first time world champion in professional cycling . He finished before Van der Poel and Roche after breaking away on the last climb. He finished 1'11 before Van de Poel in a race of 270 km and a total time of 7h1'21". This victory was not a surprise. He already won the Dauphiné Liberé that year and was ready to compete in the Tour de France of 1984.
